Remotely connecting to another computer vista

Here you can see the computer name displayed within the System Properties' Computer Name tab. The Remote Desktop Connection window will appear. Enter the name or IP address of the computer you wish to connect to and click Connect. Alternatively, you can configure additional settings using the Options button. Clicking Options reveals a host of additional RDP parameters that can be set.

You can also create a shortcut icon for a Remote Desktop Connection usiong the Save button shown here on the General tab. From the Display tab, users can configure the size of the remote desktop window and the color depth.

From the Local Resources tab, users can specify sound, keyboard and local device including printer settings. Windows Vista users specify programs that should begin upon starting up a remote desktop connection using the Programs tab.

Remote Desktop Connection's Experience tab enables configuring connection speed, desktop background, font smoothing and other features to optimize performance. Server authentication and terminal services connections requiring firewall penetration are both configured using Remote Desktop Connection's Advanced tab.

When attempting to connect to other systems using Windows Vista Remote Desktop Connection, users must enter a username and password for an account possessing remote access permissions on the target workstation or server. Once proper credentials are entered, Windows Vista displays the remote system's desktop within a dedicated window.

If users attempt to connect to other systems running older versions of Windows, Windows Vista presents this security warning. To continue, users need only click Yes. Click the checkbox next to Allow users to connect remotely to this computer. Enter the username into the box, and click OK. Click OK again if needed to get back to System Properties. Click Apply. In Windows Vista, click Start , right-click Computer , select Properties , and click Remote settings in the left pane.

Click the radio button next to Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop. To give other people access, click Select Users , click Add , enter the user name, and click OK to permit that access.

Click Apply in System Properties. Enter the password, and click OK. Simple enough. Click Connect. On a local network, enter the name of the PC or browse for its listing. Enter your log-in name and password, and click OK.

Once connected, the host PC will display its log-in screen, while the remote PC is in control. Your local PC will now behave just like the remote machine. To regain control of the local PC temporarily, enter a windowed mode by clicking the frame icon or click the minimize icon. Your hardware is likely designed to permit a special ethernet signal to wake it up. Just click the box to activate this feature.

Some systems can even boot a mostly powered-off system. In either situation, the networking system uses less power than a wide-awake PC, but it does have to keep one eye open to be ready for reveille.

Right-click your network connection, choose Properties , and click Configure. Then, under System , select About , and under Windows specifications , look for Edition. When you're ready, select Start , and open Settings. Select the remote PC name that you added, and then wait for the connection to complete.
